Nice habitat! I'm going to post a picture of mine too. I'll add you as a friend. Don't worry, I don't mind what people write about so long as I have SOMEBODY to talk trade with. I liked your metaphor about the grape vine and path of least resistance; it really does describe the process of writing for me.
I'm working on a novel and several short stories. The novel is almost done. I'm revising it now, which takes more discipline (for me) than the actual writing. I know what you mean about not having writing as part of your day job. But I'm determined to make time for it, I guess...
Thanks! And Hi! It was a cool metaphor - sometimes I really surprise myself. (May have to nick that off for later use.) And I'm glad to have people to talk trade with, too!
I'm one of those who continually rewrites. I'll be working along, then say - hey, this would be cooler if it was foreshadowed. So I go back. More often, I get stuck, go back to the beginning to reread and find my thread, and end up changing wording, catching errors, and improving dialogue. Which is a good thing, because by the time I know the end of the story, I've lost interest and I'm ready to go on to something else. That's what takes the discipline for me - finishing the story. I've got shorts mostly finished, several ideas/starts cooking, and one novel that seems to be going along nicely. And two pieces of fanfiction - sort of recreational writing that allows endless experimentation. Fun.
You'll make time for it. Sometimes I don't sleep much because I come home from work in the mood to write, then am up until four or so, typing away. It's all worth it.
